General notes
This photograph of Briercliffe Road shows the junction with Cobden Street at Duke Bar. Only ten years before many of the shops here had been residential properties, with small front yards.
The shop on the corner is Herman Lang's pork butchers. Herman was born in Germany in 1871. He took over the business from fellow German immigrant George Wagner in 1903 (see link). Herman lived there with his wife Marie, who is probably the lady stood outside. His son Louis also worked there as an assistant and later ran his own black pudding shop in the town, but was more famous for his photography and interest in local history.
The business closed sometime during the First World War and Herman died in 1935. It is not known whether Herman and his wife were interred during the war, which is a possible reason for the business closing.
