Fern bank was built c1880-90. The owners have included cotton manufacturer Alfred Lancaster and the corn merchant Thomas Hargreaves. This is one of the oldest standing buildings in the Coal Clough area.
On the 1891 Census. Living there is Alfred Lancaster and his wife Mary Ann Hargreaves, their seven Children, Mary Ann's Mother who is the widow of Thomas Hargreaves and two servants.
