General notes
These cartoons are from the Lancashire Evening Post collection (ref DDPR/138/87B) held at Lancashire Archives. They were owned and compiled by Henry Ashworth, a cotton master and founder of the Anti-Corn Law League and refer to the Preston Lock-Out or strike of 1853/54.

This illustration was used in a project to mark the Bi-Centenary of Charles Dickens birth in 2012. Charles Dickens visited Preston at that time and commented on the Preston Lock-Out in his magazine Household Worlds on 11th February 1854. The strike centered on workers demand to have wages restored to previous levels after a 10-20% cut.
