General notes
Built in 1838. For many years in the 19th century, no. 43 was the home and business premises of James Walmsley, currier. The Walmsley family had moved out by 1871, although they continued to run their business here until the late 1880s.
In the 1881 census, only number 39 was occupied and was in use as a beerhouse called The Currier's Arms. It became notorious as a place for illegal betting and in 1893 local magistrates refused the renewal of the licence.
The property was sold for £13 in June 1897 on the understanding that the purchaser would demolish it within two months of the sale.
