These shops stood on the site of the Wesley School, which opened on the 28 November 1903. Many well known Accrington tradesmen had shops here including Fielden, the hatter who manufactured his own felts, Richard Bond and his son-in-law who were drapers, Rushton's fruiterers and 'Fish Alice', a well known local character, had a shop here before moving further along the street
