In March 2011 the issue desk at St Annes Library was replaced with self service terminals as part of a county-wide programme across Lancashire Libraries. Having been introduced in many academic libraries self service facilities were becoming increasingly used in public libraries by the second decade of the 21st Century. Self service machines were also becoming more widely used in retail outlets.
