George Lyon and his accomplices met at Parson's Meadow on their way to burgle Westwood House, Wigan. They were captured, and three were hanged for the crime on 22 April 1815 at Lancaster; Edward Ford gave evidence against the others and was set free. The ancient meadow yielded an annual rent of over 24 pounds to Dr Bridgeman, rector of Wigan, in 1616.
