General notes

Nelson's market hall was built in 1889. A clock tower was added in 1904.
The public library opened 26th April 1890. The library moved in 1895 to the newly built technical school on Market Street.
The market was destroyed by fire 11/03/1932.
A temporary market was erected on the site until the completion of the Arndale Centre in 1965. In 1974 a new library was built, returning the free public library to its original site 84 years after it was first opened there.
