General notes
Break time in a 1920's weaving shed.
There were two breaks of 10 minutes at 10.30am and 3.00pm.
Notice the gas mantles above. At lighting up time the tacklers would line up at the end of each row with their tapers (on cloth poles), in sight of the manager, who would turn on the gas with a large wheel.
The tacklers would light the gas being careful not to put the taper too near the mantle. If it broke the flame would lengthen to 6 inches and not give light.
A mantle could not be replaced until the gas was turned of again.
