It was errected in 1940 as the quarters of a search light platoon. This group of soldiers was withdrawn after the Battle of Britain, and the Home Guard took it over as a riffle range.
The search platoon were the Red Spa detachment of the Light Regiment Royal Artillery, and the Home Guard were the Nelson and Colne companies of the Twenty Eigth County of Lancashire Home Guard Battalion.
The Pill Box was built to protect the Search Light from enemy ground troops. It had a view of three main roads.
