Original building was opened in 1881 for Nelson council.
Then extended in 1883 with the addition of Town Clerk's Office, Police Station, Petty Sessions Court, and School Board Office.
The Poice Station in 1896 housed 1 inspector, 2 sergeants, & 18 constables.
