This aerial view shows the Walverden Area of Nelson in the left hand corner of the image. Walverden School E386695 N437658 was opened in 1898. Chaffers Siding Cabin and level crossing is at the centre of the image E386425 N437929. The Victory Works where the famous Victory V Lozenges were made is at the top left of the image E386264 N437868. Victory Works opened in 1890 and by 1953 employed 300 people. The factory closed in 1987 and was demolished in 1988. The Palace Hippodrome theatre, E386096 N437883, opened as a variety theatre in 1909. later becoming a cinema and then the Star Bingo Club in 1963. It was finally demolished in October 2010. Next to the Palace is The Alexandra Billiard Hall E386139 N437849 which was opened in 1908. It is still open today as a snooker and pool hall. Holme Mill E386071 N437841 was demolished to make way for the Arndale Shopping Centre which was opened in 1967. St Philips Church E386474 N438158 is to be found on Leeds Road.It was completed in 1902.Bradley Baths E386173 N438177, later to become Nelson Baths, was opened in 1913. it was built on the site of Bradley Cornmill.
