General notes
Inscribed on back 'At the ;back of Old Shambles Chippendales shop, MPS 25.' Strait shambles was an ancient passsage which ran from the Mitre Inn, Market Square to the New shambles in Molyneux Squre, to the left is the Shakespeare Tavern a later addition to the back of the Mitre. Centrally placed is the Swan with two necks tavern, these 2 public houses were among 7 demolished to make way for the Harris Museum & art gallery. In 1861 Strait Shambles was described as lines of close butchers shops running at right angles from the market with a dark living room in the rear of each and a smaller and darker sleeping room above. Apparently unaware that strait meant narrow a 19th century town official changed the name to Straight shambles.
