General notes
New Shambles from Lancaster Road, this unique photograph clearly shows the architectural details of the New Shambles, The original name for the buildings was New Shambles to differentiate them from property called the Old Shambles situated on th east side of the Town Hall, with the change of use of the old premises the misnomer old began to be applied to the Lancaster Road buildings. The Whitewashed section on the far left was the old Preston Post Office (the first in pRESTON) where mail was collected and delivered throughout the 19th century. Several men standing about wearing typical late Victorian dress note the old woman in the forground wearing shawl and bonnet over wide skirts and carrying a woven bag. Had she been shopping for meat in the shambles.
