The "Colonel Ratsey" of London in Preston Dock. This vessel was built at Lytham and launched on May 3rd 1939. It was a stern quarterwheel cargo steamer built for the United Africa Company for service on the Niger and Benue rivers. She was designed to either push or pull 6 flat bottom barges in relatively shallow water where a traditional propellor would become fouled. Her maiden voyage was from Preston to Buritu, Nigeria on July 3rd 1939. She was named in honour of Colonel H.E. Ratsey, Director of the United Africa Company.
