Alfred Lovell Price, born in Southampton, was a Carver, Guilder & Picture frame maker in various locations in Lancaster from 1882. He moved to 8 New Street in 1896. He died in 1928 when his son William took over the business.

The dating of the image is based on the assumption that it was painted from life. The location of the mill can be found on the 1840s Ordnance Survey map, but is gone by the 1890s map, the area now having houses built upon it.
