On the 31st of August 1914, the army held a recruitment day at the Market Square, Kirkham, attended by 1200 residents. By the end of the day 100 men in the photo shown, had volunteered to join the 7th Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. The photo is taken in front of William Bowdler house on the Market Square, now demolished.
