Canon Rodgers died on the 5th October 1917 aged 83. He was born in Liverpool and ordained in 1858. His first curacy was as Bishop of Auckland and later was incumbant at St. James. He exercised a great influence and three new parishes - St. Peter's , St. Andrew's and St Mary Magdalen's owe their existence to his initiative and generosity. He was a firm believer in religious education in day schools and opposed the school board system.
