General notes
The hospital stood in the grounds of a house originally owned by William Tunstill. During the Great War, the house was used as an auxiliary hospital and in 1920 it became a voluntary hospital as a memorial to local men killed in the war. In 1932 it was decided to provide a new hospital building, the bulk of the money being raised by the people of Nelson. The new hospital opened on 31st October 1936.
When the route of the M65 motorway was being planned in the 1970's the inspector's report found that the hospital 'blocked the only practical route'. It was demolished in 1986.
