Stocks Well is situated at the entrance to the castle playing fields formerly named Stocks Meadow, the smallest of the three town water wells which formed the water supply of the borough until the establishment of the water works on Grindleton Fell under the Waterwork Act of 1880. Stocks well was sealed in 1880 after two children nearly drowned that year.
