General notes
Clitheroe has three natural wells. Heild well is situated at the bottom of Wellgate - hence its name. It is the largest of the town's public wells (it was sometimes referred to as the Town Well) and is sited at the oldest junction of roads in the town. Its name is thought to imply that it was covered at one time.
The Museum Committee discussed closure of the wells in Wellgate and Well Terrace in November 1946 to make way for road improvements. A collecting box was placed in the museum for public contributions. The wells are still there in 2014!
