"Thomas Store was a Lancaster industrialist and philanthropist. He was also founder of the Storey Institute (formerly the Mechanics Institute) with a Free LibraryInstitute (formerly the Mechanics Institute) with a Free Library, Technical and Art Schools which opened in 1891 to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

He was knighted in 1887 for services to Lancaster and the Nation."
