General notes

The mechanical pressure filter house, at Hurstwood Reservoir, was constructed by Bell Brothers and completed in 1923. It was opened by Alderman Keighley in Septmber of that year.

It originally contained seven Bell's Mechanical Pressure Filters, but this was later increased to 14 and it had a capacity of 2 million gallons per day.

The pressure filters were cylinders, 8ft in diameter and contained 4ft 6inches of sand at the bottom. Water was forced in from the top under pressure. It then passed through the sand, which cleared it of various impurities, ready for consumption.

The development of different filtration processes led to the closure the filter house and the removal of the machinery. The building remains, but it has been sold to a private owner.
