The Old Town Hall was built in 1793 at a cost £2000. It replaced the Town Hall of 1671 and provided meeting and court rooms, the town lock up and a market on the ground floor. It was designed by Major Thomas Jarratt. The cupola and top were were added after the building opened and were designed by Thomas Harrison (who also designed Skerton Bridge). After the Town Hall moved to Dalton Square in 1910, a bank occupied the ground floor (and its large walk-in vault can still be found in the basement) The whole building became the City Museum in 1977.
