The branch library in Hapton was located on Whitefield Street. The library was purchased on a lease in 1955. In the late 1970's it became clear that the library building was becoming very dilapidated and despite correspondence between the landlord and the district librarian, these issues remained unresolved. In 1983, when the lease was due to expire, and with no money to construct purpose built premises, it was decided that the lease would not renewed and the library would close. Library provision was maintained in the Hapton area through the mobile service.
