Photograph of St. Bartholomew's Church in Chipping taken from Talbot Street.The Mannex & Co "History topography and directory of mid-Lancashire" in 1854 describes the Parish Church as follows: "dedicated to St. Bartholomew, is a neat building consisting of a nave, aisles, and tower. It is supposed to be of the age of Henry VII or VIII, but the date of the original fabric is unknown. The columns on the south are lofty and octagonal, while those on the north are low and divided by pointed arches; and the windows are small. The church was re-seated, pewed, and altered in 1706. The east side of the south aisle forms a chapel, called Wolfhouse Quyre, and is the property of the Earl of Derby. An inscription upon a white stone, on the south side of the altar commemorates John Millner, vicar, who died in 1777, aged 67, and in whose incumbency, the Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, attempted to preach in the church but was prevented"...
