Frederick Maddison was elected Liberal M.P. for Burnley in January 1906, beating the Conservative Gerald Arbuthnot by a majority of 324, the previous Conservative incumbent William Mitchell choosing not to stand again. There was also a substantial vote for the Socialist Henry Hyndman. Born in Boston Lincs. he trained as a compositor and became a prominent trade unionist, being President of the 1886 Trade Union Congress and editor of Railway workers' publication Railway Review. In 1897 he became the first working class M.P. for Sheffield Brightside, losing the seat in 1900 when his pro-Boer stance proved unpopular. In 1910 he narrowly (maj 95) lost Burnley to the Conservative Gerald Arbuthnot with Henry Hyndman again standing as a Socialist. Fred Maddison subsequently stood several times in various constituencies, but was never elected again. He remained active in the labour and peace movements. He died 12 March 1937 aged 80.
