Preston Guild
In 1179 Henry II granted Preston its first Charter. It gave the town the right to hold a Guild Merchant with all its liberties and free customs; the Freemen of the Borough could sell their wares without payment of fee, fine or toll and the Guild Court could make laws for the town in relation to that trade. The first recorded Guild was 1328 and since 1542 the Guild Merchant has been held every twenty years, with the exception of 1942. Originally the Guild was a time for the Freemen confirm their rights and to enrol their sons and grandsons, nowadays a Guild Roll is still compiled and a Guild Court held, but it is primarily a civic celebration with processions, concerts and exhibitions.
