First images from a war
At the instigation of Prince Albert, who admired his work, Roger Fenton (28 March 1819 - 8 August 1869) was commissioned to visit the Crimea and become the first war photographer in 1855. Despite contracting cholera and suffering several injuries, he was able to take over 300 photos using large glass plates and a "studio" camera. This album features 60. Its full title is " Photographs of the seat of war in the Crimea. The series of views, groups, and portraits, was taken by Mr. Fenton during the spring and summer of 1855, and is intended to illustrate faithfully the scenery of the camps; to display prominent incidents of military life, as well as to perpetuate the portaits of those distinguished officers, who have taken part in the memorable siege of Sebastopol."
